The Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC) has taken an important step towards expanding its international engagements with the designation of Dr.Amos Hosea Kuje as the Council’s International Representative. This development follows a strategic meeting held between the NPCC’s leadership and Dr. Kuje, where a pathway for deeper global cooperation and alignment with international maritime standards were extensively discussed.

The meeting was attended by the NPCC Chairman, Mr. Bolaji Sunmola, and the Vice Chairperson of the Council, Chief (Mrs.) Jean Chiazor Anishere, SAN, both of whom emphasized the critical importance of strengthening the Council’s presence in the global maritime policy circles for the betterment of Nigeria’s Ports Community.

The NPCC Chairman reiterated the importance of deepening international cooperation as Nigeria pursue competitiveness within the global logistics and maritime ecosystem. He noted that Dr. Kuje’s maritime policy’s expertise is unique and will serve as a bridge between Nigeria’s ports industry and the international organizations including regulatory bodies, development partners, think tanks, and professional associations.

The Vice Chairperson provided significant insights during the deliberations, particularly on issues relating to legal frameworks and port governance, an area which she has long been recognized as a leading expert.

Dr. Kuje, who currently is the Regional Advisor (Africa)/technical expert on Maritime Labour Conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), is an alumnus of the World Maritime University with a PhD in Maritime Studies from the University of Greenwich in the United Kingdom. No doubt, Dr Kuje brings extensive experience in maritime policies, international regulatory processes, research and capacity-building, bringing valuable to the NPCC.

His role with NPCC is expected to enhance the Council’s external relations by fostering strategic linkages with global institutions, development partners, professional bodies, and think tanks to mutually promotes maritime and port-sector priorities in international dialogues, conferences, and technical committees. It is also in addition to advising NPCC on best practices and governance, facilitates technical cooperations, agreements, partnerships, and knowledge exchanges with international institutions.

At the end, it is hoped that the outcomes will enhance not only NPCC’s executives in the engagements in global initiatives and support for a mutual input and visibility but also that of the stakeholders in the emerging international regulatory frameworks and trade facilitation systems. The designation underscores NPCC’s commitment to strengthen its advocacy role, deepened international cooperation, and ensure that Nigeria’s maritime interests are feasible and up to date at the highest levels of global discourse towards economic growth within the blue economy.

NPCC therefore extends its warm congratulations to Dr. Kuje and looks forward to a productive partnership that will positively impact Nigeria’s maritime landscape.
