NPCC Chairman Sunmola Urges Maritime Students to Embrace Innovation, Digital Skills at AMSAY Conference 2025

The Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC) reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment and the future of maritime development at the 9th edition of the Annual Maritime Students and Youth (AMSAY) Conference held in Lagos on Tuesday.

Delivering a powerful goodwill message at the event, NPCC Chairman, Mr. Bolaji Sunmola, called on maritime students and young professionals to actively prepare for the immense opportunities emerging in the rapidly evolving maritime sector. The 2025 conference, themed “Automation and Digitalization of Maritime Operations,” provided a platform for NPCC to emphasize the vital role of technology, innovation, and continuous learning in shaping the next generation of maritime leaders.

“The maritime industry is no longer only about ships and dockworkers — it now needs data scientists, analysts, coders, and smart systems operators,” said Sunmola. “Youthful energy and fresh ideas are essential to the success of smart ports and green logistics solutions.”

Sunmola, who also serves as the National President of the National Association of Stevedoring Operators (NASO), urged students to develop core digital competencies such as maritime data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity. He emphasized that these skills will soon be indispensable for tasks like analyzing shipping trends, managing port operations, and securing digital infrastructure.

“Data is the new oil in the digital economy. As our ports and vessels become more connected, the need for cyber-aware professionals grows,” he noted.

Highlighting the relevance of logistics technology, he encouraged students to explore how smart tools like GPS, RFID, and IoT are reshaping maritime supply chains. He also advocated for deeper knowledge of terminal operating systems and platforms like NAVIS, Port Community Systems, and e-documentation software.

Sunmola urged young people to be “tech-curious,” to continually upskill beyond traditional curriculum, and to pursue certifications in areas like logistics tech, maritime ICT, and data science. He also encouraged them to gain practical experience through simulations and internships, and to engage actively with industry networks.

“Be present. Ask questions. Introduce yourself. Follow maritime trends and connect with professionals. You are not just the future — you are the present, and we at NPCC believe in your potential to lead the transformation,” he said.

He reassured the audience that NPCC will continue working closely with training institutions, regulators, and stakeholders to promote youth participation in port operations and stevedoring innovations.

Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Funke Agbor (SAN), President of the Nigerian Maritime Law Association (NMLA), encouraged students to take full advantage of networking opportunities and emphasized the broad scope of the maritime sector — including both land-based and offshore careers.

“You have ambition, you have prospects — seize the moment,” she told students. “The maritime industry offers space for your IT skills and your creativity.”

Former NPA official Mrs. Eunice Ezeoke challenged students to leverage technology positively and avoid digital distractions, urging them to focus on learning, value-driven engagement, and self-improvement through specialized training and smart digital practices.

The conference, organized by Platform Communications, featured engaging activities including a speech-making contest by top students, panel discussions, awards for top graduates, and photo sessions.

As NPCC continues to advocate for forward-looking reforms and innovation in the maritime space, its message to Nigerian youth remains clear: The future of ports is digital — and the time to lead is now.
