NPCC Inaugurates Board of Trustees to Strengthen Port Sector Reforms

As part of its renewed commitment to enhancing the performance and governance of Nigeria’s port system, the Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC) has officially inaugurated its Board of Trustees (BoT) during the Council’s quarterly meeting held on Thursday in Lagos.

Delivering the keynote address, NPCC Chairman, Mr. Bolaji Sunmola, described the inauguration as a critical step toward consolidating the Council’s mandate to advocate, advise, arbitrate, and consult on key port development issues.

According to Sunmola, the BoT will play a pivotal role in boosting efficiency across the nation’s seaports by providing strategic oversight, experienced guidance, and fostering public-private sector synergy.

“The NPCC is not a standalone entity—it is a bridge between port users, regulators, and operators, designed to offer practical solutions to long-standing industry challenges,” Sunmola stated.

In a bid to advance its reform agenda, the Chairman also revealed that the NPCC is establishing a strategic partnership with the London Ports Consultative Council, with a delegation set to visit London in the coming weeks to exchange insights and explore collaborative approaches for Nigeria’s maritime transformation.

Themed “Digital Information and Data Management for Sustainable Marine and Blue Economy,” the meeting underscored the urgent need for modern digital frameworks in port administration.

“Nigeria’s seaports are the lifeblood of our economy. Delays, inefficiencies, and regulatory misalignment reduce productivity and discourage investment. Now is the time to ask: What can we build today that ensures our ports are globally competitive within five years?” Sunmola emphasized.

The Chairman also expressed optimism that with the support of stakeholders and the new Board, the Council will gain greater financial and institutional backing to realize its strategic goals.
